Tips for Making Your Pictures Great

If everyone in the picture is comfortable, relaxed, and feels good about themselves, they'll take a great picture.

Location:

Pick a location where everyone in the photo will be as comfortable and relaxed as possible. If at all possible, take your pictures outdoors. Natural light and fresh air make everyone feel and look their best.

Clothing:

Remember you want the picture to focus on the people in it, not what they're wearing. Steer clear of loud patterns and flashy graphics that will distract the viewer. Also, white is highly reflective, and will reflect a flash brightly. (This can cause the wearer to look washed out and stand out from everyone else.)

While it's great if everyone in the picture wears clothing that coordinates, there's no need for everyone to match to make it a great picture. The most important thing is that everyone wears clothing that they find comfortable and that they think makes them look good.

The best time to take pictures:

For outdoor photos, the best lighting is available starting approximately two hours before sunset. At this time, the light is less direct, so you don't have to squint. Cloudy days are also great for the same reason. Harsh, direct light and strong wind should be avoided - both cause squinting and strained expressions.

Also, make sure pictures fit comfortably into your schedule. Adults who have ample time to make sure they look their best will be more relaxed. Children's schedules should also be accommodated if possible: If it takes your daughter an hour to wake up fully from her nap, give her time for that. If your son is irritated that he has to miss football practice to take pictures, it will show in your pictures. Ideally, you want a time that allows everyone to relax and have fun together.
